The original AI Shield

human detection at its smartest

Safety Shield is the most advanced AI human form recognition safety system available on the market, and the only AI collision avoidance system with a 99.6% accuracy rate. Developed specifically for the construction industry over the past decade, the system can also be fitted to any type of plant, for industries such as construction, rail, mining, demolition and waste.

A camera-based collision avoidance system, Safety Shield uses AI to identify people who are in the danger zone of moving plant and machinery. The system is trained to filter out all other objects and only detects the human form, acting as a third eye for the operator and sounding an alert if a collision is imminent.

The Safety Shield system scans and detects all objects around it, but the smart technology will only alert the operator to pedestrians and vulnerable site personnel entering the danger recognition zones. Through filtering out all objects, the Safety Shield system reduces unnecessary distractions for the plant operator, allowing them uninterrupted focus on the task in hand.

bespoke DETECTION ZONES

Safety Shield's zone configurations can be adapted depending on the requirements of each machine and site. For example, a bulldozer may require a different zone configuration than a telehandler, depending on the type of work being carried out.

The zone configurations are important as they improve safety and efficiency on the worksite. Safety Shield allows you to configure yellow zones and red zones, giving you full control of people detection and alerts.

By adapting the AI human detection zone configurations to suit the specific requirements of each machine and site, site managers help to prevent accidents and improve the overall efficiency of construction operations.

Below are just some video examples on how the Safety Shield AI collision avoidance system works when fitted to your machine, for the yellow and red human detection zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Safety Shield is a camera-based collision avoidance system system which is installed on construction equipment. It utilises AI technology to recognise any human form that is in danger of coming into contact with moving construction equipment. The system then prevents accidents by alerting the operator to the danger. Digital Thumbs Up is an optional addition that provides a 90 degree safe passage to approach and interact with the operator, safe in the knowledge that the operator has seen the pedestrian. Due to video data, the equipment owner can see first-hand as situations unfold onsite. They can then review incidents, behaviour and site layouts, enabling them to take the necessary precautions and act accordingly.

  • At Safety Shield, we have spent many years dedicated to working with construction equipment, OEM and Tier 1 operators to develop and define human form recognition technology.

Our original AI shield has been created following ten years of research and development. We made sure our product is suited for harsh environments. Unlike many other competitors, Safety Shield Global owns its own Intellectual Property (IP) outright.

All of our published certifications (ISO, ECE, REG10 and EMARK) have been achieved under the Safety Shield Global name. The AI algorithms that are trained to detect human form are refined using high quality video footage rather than still images, meaning the technology dramatically reduces false alerts.

  • Safety Shield is the only AI collision avoidance system with a 99.6% accuracy rate. This is the reason why Safety Shield has the most advanced technology for plant and machinery.

  • The Safety Shield System T offers front and rear safety zones whereas the F offers 270-degree (wrap around) safety zones.

  • Both safety zones can be easily adjusted in just a few minutes.

  • Yes, although it is more cost effective to order/install it at the same time.

  • 108 by 60 degrees as standard.

  • Yes – the system will then operate as a visual and audible alarm.

  • Yes – the system has a multi-service SIM card installed meaning that whilst the machine is active it will show where the machine is located and operating. The exception to this is if there is no signal, in which case the information is stored on the SSD card until the signal is restored and uploaded to the cloud showing the date and time of the GPS location at the time that the information was recorded.

  • The host device can store up to 250 hours on continuous loop (about a month’s recording).

  • Yes, individual videos can be downloaded through the customer’s Vue data dashboard and stored for training purposes or for the emergency services.

  • Yes – the host (in the UK) comes with the SIM/SSD card already installed so switching a data package on or off is straight-forward.

International distributors or customers please note: the cost to supply SIM/SSD Cards and transmit data to the cloud varies greatly from country to country along with the local regulations to allow it to happen, so each overseas country (outside the UK) will require its specific data package(s) to be quoted on a case-by-case basis.

  • No, the standard is for no screen to be provided. Customers often tell us that the operator has enough to keep them busy without providing something else to distract them. However upon request we could install a 7-inch screen. Contact us for more information.

  • No, a screen would show live events, for example the same as a reversing camera.

  • On a System T, a split screen is displayed for each camera (one at a time) and on a System F, it is split into four segments.

  • Yes. With a key switch it can be turned off, for example working on a housing estate, or late at night.

  • Yes for example, an arm or leg or even a head emerging from a maintenance hole.

  • Yes, the system has even detected the ‘painted man’ on a zebra crossing.

  • We did previously have this as an option however we encountered GDPR challenges and there was some operator resistance to having a camera in the cab.

  • Our warranty period is 12 months as standard.

  • No, our system uses cameras and AI to detect the human form rather than relying on sensor or radar-based techology.

  • No. The Safety Shield system takes feed from either the radio or cigar lighter, so it would not interfere with OEM warranty.

  • No, if customers’ engineers are trained by Safety Shield and conduct the install as demonstrated, it would not impact the Safety Shield warranty.

  • The cost of SIM cards, cloud storage, data provision and other aspects are rapidly. At the moment we have 3 main options:

No data – using the system as a visual and audible alarm.

Partial data – you receive a heat map of all of the incidents, time date stamp and GPS location.

Full data – includes the 10 second video for each incident, tool box talks, and onsite safety suggestions.

  • Yes, Safety Shield is actively pursuing alternative data packages to ensure that we offer the best basket of choices to customers. Just like how your mobile phone package will evolve over time, Safety Shield and the customer can monitor the amount of data used per machine, per month so the information is available to make the best decision upon each renewal.

  • Notification timings can be set within the data package at time of activation. The system is SIM card driven so if a signal is available then notifications can be either at specified intervals or as they occur (signal permitting).

  • The incident notification can be sent to a specified phone but because of GDPR regulations the video must be accessed by nominated persons from within the customer’s Vue dashboard.

  • Customers can decide whether to receive all incident videos, or specify to send just the red zone videos, for example. This enables a more manageable outcome. Furthermore, Safety Shield will monitor the red zone videos in particular, or will monitor parts of the site where we see high incident warning levels. Whilst it is physically impossible for Safety Shield to view all alerts as soon as they become available, if we do see something that looks dangerous we will of course phone the customer directly.

  • We are not looking to embarrass employees or to have them fired as there is little point in just kicking the can down the road. The goal is to help customers achieve long-term behavioural change amongst employees to keep them and their colleagues safe whilst operating in dangerous construction or industrial environments.
